In Bushranger Territory, adjacent to Mandagery Creek and in the Lachlan River Basin
is the small town of Eugowra
('Eugowra' is said to derive from the Aboriginal word meaning "the place where the sand washes down from the hills".)
The village developed in the 1860's on the old 'Eugowra' station - beside Mandagery Creek where it was on the route to the Lachlan goldfields. A bridge was erected over Mandagery Creek in 1869 and sometime in the 1860's The John Bull Inn was built - this is now the present day Fat Lamb Hotel.
In 1881 the Eugowra Courthouse, Police station and School were build.
In 1940 a new bridge over the Mandagery was opened.
Granite used for the construction of new Parliament House came from the low-lying hills around Eugowra and was supplied by the local Granite Mill.
The only large gold escort robbery in New South Wales took place at Escort Rock.
Escort Rock is along the road to Orange 3 km east of Eugowra. Here you will find a plaque noting the most famous incident in local history - Australia's largest gold robbery in 1862 by Frank Gardiner's bushranging gang, then including Ben Hall.
Blocking the road with two bullock teams and making the drivers lie on the road, feigning drunkenness, they waited for the gold coach. When it arrived, they sprayed the troopers and driver with a hail of gunfire, wounding two of the troopers who all fled the scene - while the gang made off with the loot..
BBQ, picnic and toilet facilities are available here.
